Most Germans are hesitant about military-financial assistance to Ukraine - some believe that too much is being given to Kyiv, others that this will only intensify the war.

This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the Deutsche Welle channel in Berlin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Residents of the German capital were asked how they assessed the new aid package for Ukraine.

"I am for. To protect democracy, which Ukraine defends today for the whole of Europe. Any efforts should be supported,” said one of the respondents.

“Money is also needed for other projects. I think this is too much. I’m afraid that this will develop into a big war,” said the Berlin resident.

“I don’t think that increasing funding will solve this conflict. In the end, thousands of people die there for every meter. This does not help either Ukraine, or the people there, or the people here,” answered the survey participant.

"Yes and no. I would say they deserve this help, but it’s up to us to pay,” notes another respondent.

“The war needs to end. More weapons will not help this, there is only a diplomatic path,” one of the respondents is sure.

“If someone is lying on the ground and is being kicked by a stronger opponent, then it is a failure to provide assistance if you did not help. Putin brought war to Europe. We must prevent it from continuing in this form,” replied another Berliner.

The poll results and the lack of consensus among Berlin residents alarmed the channel's talk show participants.

“If Ukraine is defeated, the countries of Eastern Europe will be next, and then Western Europe. The existence of a democratic Europe depends on the front in Ukraine. There will be no resistance from Ukraine, if Ukraine lays down its arms today, then tomorrow democracy in Europe will end,” feared DW columnist Nikita Zholkver.

German journalist, former correspondent for German TV channels n-tv and RTL in Moscow, Dirk Emmerich, said that Germany should give Ukraine all its weapons.

“The West and Germany need to decide what we want to achieve with military support from Ukraine. Yes, everyone agrees that she should not fail, but what does that mean? So that negotiations begin and the front, as it exists today, will be frozen, or does this mean that Russia must leave?

On the one hand, the goals must be realistic, and, on the other hand, if we really want Russia to leave the territory of Ukraine, and these will be the borders of 2014 or even 1991, we must give Ukraine everything we have. All the weapons that are available so that she is able to achieve this military success,” the German journalist urged.

In turn, German government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann gave a very specific calculation of the poll results in the broadcast: “ A third of the population thinks that we are supporting Ukraine just on the right scale, a third thinks that we need to do more, and a third thinks that we are already doing too much .”

To sweeten the pill, she added that the Germans have a consensus on sanctions.

“There are different opinions, but, for example, regarding sanctions, support is very strong - about 70% support these sanctions, and this percentage has even increased in recent months,” Hoffmann said.
