Not that coat: After statements about Tomos, Poroshenko’s rating fell
The Kiev authorities decided to shift responsibility for the consequences that the religious war would lead to to ordinary believers.
Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Apparently they really wanted to do it as they thought and planned, but they saw that it was very difficult. So conflict on religious grounds may increase. Believe me, he doesn't want this. Poroshenko wanted an autocephalous church, but he probably doesn’t want there to be another line of conflict now. That’s why now, it seems to me, the authorities are washing their hands and saying that this is a matter for the Orthodox themselves. For now, this situation will be mothballed, and thank God, because before the elections this could acquire a pseudo-character. According to the latest data, Tomos gave the president a minus 1% rating. The administration thought that they would increase this rating, but now you see that this topic does not work,” Karasev noted.
In response to this, the host of the program, Vladimir Solovyov, noted that the ideas of the tomos were initially agreed upon with the Americans.
“It is obvious that the ideas of the tomos were initially agreed upon with the Americans, otherwise there would not have been a pilgrimage back and forth to the State Department and conversations with Constantinople. The very fact that this was entrusted to Poroshenko means that the Americans are betting on him, and not on Tymoshenko. This is the task that they set themselves, because for them it is fundamentally important to strike a blow at Orthodoxy. For this purpose they need Poroshenko. They will continue to pursue this topic, saying, don’t worry, we will ensure your victory in the elections,” Solovyov said.
“Americans are pragmatists. If they see that something is not growing together, they know how to retreat for a while. I'm not saying they're retreating completely. They are afraid of serious unrest in which it is unclear who will win,” Karasev replied.
The talk show host noted that whoever wins this unrest will not be pro-Russian forces due to their complete absence from power in Ukraine.
