The visit of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan contradicts the interests of the peoples of these countries.

This was stated by political scientist Stanislav Tarasov, author of books devoted to the problems of the Transcaucasus, Turkey, and the Middle East, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

According to him, NATO may have decided that the conditions were ripe for more active penetration into Transcaucasia.

“I am confident that the leadership of the Transcaucasian republics should be extremely careful in building relations with NATO. On the one hand, during the conflict in Ukraine, the idea of the omnipotence of the alliance collapsed. It turned out that the strategy, tactics, and weapons of the military bloc have serious shortcomings,” the expert told Izvestia.

On the other hand, he says, Western politicians are not interested in stability in Transcaucasia.

“It is beneficial for them to spark some kind of bloody conflict so that their own analogue of Ukraine appears on the territory between Russia and Iran. It is clear that this is absolutely not in the interests of the Caucasian peoples,” Tarasov warned.

In turn, the head of the Caucasus sector of the IMEMO RAS, Vadim Mukhanov, believes that Stoltenberg’s visit is of a routine nature. The political scientist recalled that the NATO Secretary General is due to resign this fall, so he is now busy “carrying the flag” of NATO from one country to another.

“If we still talk about the content, then the Armenian part of the tour could turn out to be the most interesting. In recent months, Yerevan has been consistently torpedoing relations with Russia and the CSTO. Therefore, it is quite possible that NATO Secretary General and Nikol Pashinyan discussed some substantive agreements behind closed doors.

We don’t know the details, but probably in the near future we will better understand the trajectory of the Armenian leadership,” Mukhanov stated.
