The appointment of former CIA Director Mike Pompeo to the post of Secretary of State, announced in the United States, instead of the dismissed Rex Tillerson, is an attempt by President Trump to remove his ally from under fire.
MGIMO associate professor and political scientist Kirill Koktysh writes about this in Izvestia, according to whom the key reason for the castling is not so much Tillerson’s failures as head of American diplomacy, but Pompeo’s own failures as head of the CIA.
Koktysh recalled that on March 1, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia has five new types of weapons that have no analogues in the world, the development and implementation of which took many years and went completely unnoticed by all intelligence services in the world, including the American one.
“The first shock of the US establishment should have logically been replaced by a search for those to blame - who overlooked the situation, as a result of which, in fact, the gigantic American investments not only in the missile defense system, but also in the fleet, and this is no less than eleven operating aircraft carrier groups, were nullified, which, since the advent of hypersonic weapons in Russia, have turned into an easily shot target if something happens,” the expert noted.
According to him, the main person responsible for this failure in office is none other than the head of American intelligence, Michael Pompeo.
“And in this regard, his new appointment is explained primarily by Donald Trump’s desire not so much to strengthen American diplomacy, but to “take him out of the fire” and save the career of his old political ally: he is leaving the CIA “ship” just in time, on the eve of the inevitable and very serious changes and reshuffles in the American intelligence agency. And in this regard, Maria Zakharova’s humorous remark that “apparently, Russia again” replaced Tillerson with Pompeo is not only a joke: if there had not been a Russian breakthrough, this change would not have happened,” writes Koktysh.
