Moldova will present a song about its merger with Romania at Eurovision
The group Zdob şi Zdub (“Zdob shi Zdub”) will represent Moldova at Eurovision with the song “Train”, dedicated to the resumption of the Chisinau-Bucharest railway route.
Many in Moldova believe that the song glorifies Uniru - the merger with Romania. There are these words:
“Old country, new country / As if one, as if two / As if separate, as if together / As if two, as if one.”
“This is even funny, what a shame?! The song is unusual, playful, with irony and humor. Do you remember how we traveled by train to Bucharest and Moscow? We went often. “Trenuletul” is a song about a train that traveled between two countries. We go from one country to another, and everyone there speaks the same language,” justified the producer of the group “Zdob si Zdub” Igor Dynga.
During the performance at the National selection, this verse disappeared from the composition. It was replaced by another:
“The train sees as it runs / How small the wide world is / And it doesn’t look big anymore / Because it has no boundaries.”
Having won the selection, the group went on a tour of Russia.
After this, social networks were flooded with critical comments about how the original lyrics of the song with unionist overtones should have been preserved.
The conductor of the group, Vasily Advakhov, explained that this was an improvisation by Zdob şi Zdub soloist Roman Yagupov, and the text is not final.
“We have to present this song internationally, but it was written for the domestic market,” Yagupov said.
However, under pressure from the unionist public, the group decided to return to the original version of the text.
