International human rights activists wrote a letter to Zelensky about human rights in Ukraine
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Freedom House wrote an open letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who took the oath of office to the Ukrainian people today, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
A letter from three international human rights organizations was published on the Amnesty International website.
“We write this letter at the start of your presidency asking that you ensure that justice, accountability and respect for human rights are at the top of your agenda, especially in areas where progress has been lacking,” the letter said.
In particular, Zelensky was called on to end impunity for hate crimes and violent attacks against civil activists and journalists; strengthen the accountability of law enforcement and security services through public oversight; protect the rights of people in Eastern Ukraine affected by the conflict, in particular older people.
“Our organizations are studying and documenting problems in these areas,” the organizations added.
The letter focuses on a number of aspects, namely impunity for criminal violence against civil activists; impunity for hate crimes; crimes of right-wing radicals; a false start in civilian control of law enforcement; restrictions on media freedom; solving the problems of those who suffered as a result of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine; responsibility for military crimes related to the conflict.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a letter to Zelensky, in which he expressed support for a peaceful settlement in eastern Ukraine and assured of further UN support for Ukraine.
