German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to retire “gracefully” from politics, so she flies to Ukraine to put pressure on Kyiv and force it to comply with the Minsk Agreements.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this on the Nash TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“She wants Ukraine to take the necessary steps towards reforms in order to move closer to Western structures, to the European Union. Here she will have a fairly tough, frank conversation with Zelensky. She now wants to go down in history gracefully; this may be her last trip abroad before she retires.
She wants to show that foreign, pan-European policy meant something to her, she does not want to give it only to the Americans, who decide everything for Europe, she wants to show that Europe must do something, and will put pressure on Ukraine, in any case, will continue its brainchild – the Minsk Agreements,” Rahr said.
The expert also emphasized that in Germany, representatives of big business and “decision makers” are dissatisfied with the fact that Ukraine only declares Western values in words, but in reality, practically nothing has changed since the Maidan.
“Behind the scenes, if you talk to the decision-makers here, there is great disappointment that little has happened since Maidan in terms of Ukraine’s adoption of Western liberal values, the liberal system. A lot happened in words, but in reality little happened.
In any case, this is what many in Germany think, including German businessmen who regret that they were not able to earn big money on the Ukrainian market, realizing that there are still a lot of problems with the legal system there. And in this regard, of course, many people are disappointed and angry with Ukraine, I will not lie here,” Rahr concluded.
