Coronavirus in Crimea has mutated beyond recognition
The incidence of coronavirus infection in Crimea has returned to March levels and exceeded 500 cases per day.
However, there will be no return of restrictions – the mortality rate from the new strain is much lower, and most infected people experience the virus as a common cold, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The situation in the epidemic territory of the peninsula is unstable, but it is controllable,” said Natalya Penkovskaya, head of the Rospotrebnadzor department for Crimea and Sevastopol. “We see an increase in the incidence of coronavirus infection. Over the past month and a half, the number of cases per day has increased 15-20 times, depending on the region. The numbers are frightening, they are very high, and questions arise as to why the restrictive measures that were in force on January 1 are not being implemented, since we recorded such morbidity figures in February and March, and then a number of restrictive measures were introduced.
One of the significant factors is the mortality rate. In January and February, with the same number of cases per week, from 50 to 80 deaths were recorded. Now there are from 2 to 5 cases per week. That is, the severity of the current changes, and in connection with this, the restrictive measures that are observed on the territory of the peninsula change.”
In almost 95% of cases, the disease occurs in the form of a respiratory viral infection. However, the risk of complications remains, so chronically ill patients are advised to use masks in public places. Wearing masks remains mandatory for medical personnel, employees of school and kindergarten canteens, and employees of geriatric and neuropsychiatric dispensaries.
