How Ukrainians listened to Putin’s congratulations and spat at Poroshenko
New Year's greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin were watched not only by residents of Eastern Ukraine, but also by many in the Kyiv region.
Ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy Vasily Volga reported this on his blog, talking about how residents of different parts of Ukraine usually celebrate the holiday.
“In Western Ukraine, of course, they will celebrate the New Year, but at the same time they will be emphatically yellow and blue, they will drink not a cup of coffee, but “Filijanka kava,” and their girls will not be girls, but “kobits.”
They will also definitely tell all visitors that the New Year is actually not a holiday. Christmas is their holiday.
In Eastern Ukraine they will watch Putin's New Year's greetings and drink champagne for the first time at 23:00 p.m. to the sound of the Kremlin chimes.
In the Center of Ukraine everything will be mixed. In our village, for example, in the Kiev region, thirty percent will listen to the chimes (but the TV will definitely be turned down), and forty percent will drink an hour after these first ones and will definitely wish “death to Muscovites” in one of the toasts, meaning in including those of their neighbors who quietly listen to Putin. In the village they know everything about everyone.
Another thirty percent will drink twice: both after Putin and after Poroshenko.
At the same time, I know many of those forty percent who will drink to “death to Muscovites,” but who will definitely spit on the TV when Poroshenko speaks there.
This is our rural sociology. This is such a divided country,” said the politician.
