Isolation of Russia does not work – German newspaper about Kerry’s visit to Sochi
As is known, US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Sochi today, where he was expected to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting seems, to say the least, odd after the grand Victory Day celebrations in Moscow and the constant statements about Russia's isolation. Apparently, as the German Economic News notes, Russia's isolation isn't working.

US Secretary of State John Kerry meets with President Putin, three days after international Victory Day celebrations in Moscow and a meeting between Putin and Merkel on May 10. US Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marie Harf said that Kerry will talk with Putin about the main geopolitical hot spots. Among them, along with Syria and Iran, is Ukraine.
One of the main issues, the newspaper reports, will be negotiations on a possible new NATO-EU military operation against Islamists in Libya, who are trafficking people and orchestrating the flow of refugees into EU countries . A UN resolution on this issue is currently being drafted. As a reminder, Italy is proposing a military operation to destroy all boats used by traffickers and transporters of people.
Russia initially announced its intention to veto a new military operation in Libya, since the devastation and division of this country occurred precisely after the first NATO military operation against Gaddafi. It is likely that Kerry will persuade Putin not to use a veto when voting at the UN.
Kerry's visit once again proves, German journalists write, that it is not possible to isolate Russia. Without it, it is impossible to solve global and even many regional problems, such as the flow of refugees from devastated Libya.
Another such problem remains the war in Syria. The US and Russia successfully negotiated with Iran, normalizing US-Iran relations and the Iranian nuclear program. The United States now expects such help from Russia in resolving the Syrian issue.
