The EU punished Russian security forces for thwarting the Ukrainian provocation in Azov
The EU authorities imposed sanctions against eight Russians, declaring them the “culprits” of last year’s Ukrainian provocation in the Kerch Strait, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was announced in the EU's official journal . A decision was also made to extend individual sanctions against Russia for six months.
“In connection with the use of force by the Russian Federation, which led to the detention of Ukrainian military personnel and ships on November 25, 2018 in the Kerch Strait ... the Council of the EU considers that eight people should be included in the list of persons subject to restrictive measures,” the document says .
Among the people included in the sanctions list are the head of the FSB border department for Crimea and Sevastopol Sergei Stankevich, his deputy Andrei Shein and the commander of the troops of the Southern Military District Alexander Dvornikov.
Bloomberg previously reported the EU's intention to impose sanctions against eight Russians, citing a source, but then specific names were not mentioned.
Let us recall that on November 25, 2018, Russian border guards arrested three ships of the Ukrainian Navy in the Kerch Strait area. Their crews are accused of violating the Russian state border.
