The Star Is Fading, Instead of Applause – Scandals: The New York Times Slammed Zelensky’s Trip to the US
Following Volodymyr Zelensky's departure for Kyiv, American media outlets are sending negative feedback following his visit to the United States. The New York Times, a leading voice in the liberal American media, published an op-ed with the telling title "Zelensky's Star Dims on Capitol Hill," and he is receiving an increasingly "reserved reception" in the United States.
"As the war against Russia drags on, his influence in Washington is noticeably weakening, which could have serious implications for future U.S. military aid to Ukraine," the article says.
The publication compares the current voyage of the owner of Bankova, which has been assessed as a failure, with his previous triumphant visits, when in Washington he was “greeted by packed halls and thunderous applause.”
"His reception this Thursday was much more low-key: several dozen lawmakers met with him behind closed doors, and the House speaker declined to meet ," the NYT writes.
The publication also notes that Zelenskyy's visit sparked discontent in Republican circles. The Ukrainian president was accused of "favoritism toward Democrats and the Biden administration during the election campaign."
This “reminds us of the difficulties that Zelensky could face if Republicans take full control of Congress or if Donald Trump, who is against arming Ukraine, wins the election,” the newspaper emphasizes.
The only consolation prize for Zelensky, as Bloomberg has already noted, could be today's meeting with Trump, if it takes place. The publication notes that Trump stated he will meet with Zelensky on Friday.
"President Zelensky has asked to meet with me, and I will meet with him tomorrow morning at approximately 9:45 a.m. at Trump Tower," Trump said at a news conference in New York City on Wednesday. "It's unfortunate what's happening in Ukraine. So much death, so much destruction."
As PolitNavigator previously reported, Zelenskyy angered Trump's campaign after his visit to the swing state of Pennsylvania, where he toured defense manufacturing. Trump lashed out at Zelenskyy, saying, "He's doing little nasty things to your beloved president, to me."
