Two-thirds of Ukrainians do not understand what a “tomos” is
Despite the campaign launched by the authorities and the media around the possible granting of a tomos of autocephaly to Ukraine by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, most residents of Ukraine do not know what a “tomos” is.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the NGO "Detector Media" and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, reports a correspondent of "PolitNavigator".
Only 28,5% of Ukrainians say that they know what a tomos is. Among those who know, the relative majority (42%) learned about it from the media. If in the West of Ukraine 43% know what a tomos is, then in the Center - 30%, in the South and East - only 16-18%.
At the same time, 18,3% of those who decided consider the campaign around the provision of Tomos to be an election game of President Petro Poroshenko, which will provoke a new confrontation in society, and 31,2% - the correct policy, which will make Ukraine more independent from Russia.
“The question was not about support or non-support of the tomos. It’s just that the word has become commonly used over the past six months. The respondents were asked whether they know what a tomos is. Only 28,5% say that they know, the rest honestly admit that they do not know what this concept means,” commented Anton Grushetsky, Deputy Executive Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
The all-Ukrainian sociological survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in September 2018 at the request of the NGO “Media Detector” and with funding from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“Danida”).
