The United States expects that the Albanians, who seized power in Kosovo, after holding early elections to the local “parliament” in early October, will cancel the decision to impose a 100% duty on goods from Serbia, which put the Slavic enclaves under an economic blockade and forced Belgrade to interrupt negotiations.
The corresponding assurances were voiced by State Department Special Representative for the Balkans Matthew Palmer and Assistant Secretary of State Philip Reeker after a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Vucic said that Serbia is ready to return to dialogue immediately after the abolition of taxes.
“This compromise must also take into account the interests of the Serbs there, as well as the preservation of the national interests of our country,” Vucic emphasized.
“We are fighting for ourselves and our people, for the best possible position. There is no such thing as an unimportant meeting, every meeting is extremely important...” he added, commenting on the results of negotiations with the Americans.
"The claim of abolishing tariffs is also supported by a statement made by Hashim Thaçi (the "president" of Kosovo ) in New York. He stated that the tariffs would likely be abolished... On the one hand, he's trying to curry favor with the West," noted career diplomat Zoran Milivojević.
Let us recall that the United States is forcing Serbia to recognize the independence of the Kosovo and Metohija region seized by Albanian separatists, promising in return accession to the European Union, where the issue of borders will supposedly become irrelevant.
