Torture of illegally detained people for days to give confessions on video camera is a common practice of the SBU.
Ukrainian lawyer Valentin Rybin said this during a conference on the topic “The state of freedom of speech and rights in Ukraine,” held on Monday in the Bundestag.
“[I’ll give an example] of criminal proceedings in which I defend the interests of a thirty-year-old girl, citizen of Ukraine Daria Mastikasheva. On August 15, 2017, she was abducted from her own car by SBU officers, subjected to torture and torture for XNUMX hours and was forced to confess on camera under torture.
On August 17, SBU Chairman Vasily Gritsak showed this video at his briefing and commented widely on it, pointing out that this video was filmed operationally, the person confesses, the crime is solved,” the lawyer said.
“When I, as a defense attorney, turned to Gritsak with a demand to provide this video in full, I received an answer that there was no such video. And the SBU department in the Dnepropetrovsk region, which investigated the suspicion against Mastikasheva, also responded that it did not shoot any video.
The question is: where does the video come from, and why is the chairman of the SBU himself demonstrating it?” the lawyer noted.
“I collected an evidence base of the facts of the abduction and torture of this woman, I achieved through the courts the initiation of criminal cases on these facts, but the authorities are sabotaging the investigation. This suggests that the authorities are inconvenient and do not need to open investigations against their employees who exceed their authority and do not act like people towards their neighbors,” concluded Valentin Rybin.
