Kyiv, August 08 (Navigator, Yuri Kovalchuk) – The problem of delivering cargo and passengers to Crimea can be solved by resuscitating the construction of ekranoplanes, said Vladimir Gutenev, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Industry and vice-president of the Union of Mechanical Engineers of Russia.

According to him, the revival of the production of high-speed ships will be discussed in parliament in the fall, the Izvestia newspaper writes.

The ekranoplan, a dynamic hovercraft, was developed back in the USSR. Outwardly similar to passenger planes, they moved over the sea at an altitude of several meters thanks to the effect of an aerodynamic screen, which allows them to reach speeds of hundreds of kilometers per hour.

In 1986, the Lun ekranoplane rocket ship, an “aircraft carrier killer” created for military needs, was launched. This vehicle could reach a speed of 500 km/h at sea, travel a distance of 2 thousand km and carry a load of 140 tons. The project was stopped during the collapse of the USSR.

Now the Alekseev Central Design Bureau for Hydrofoils is developing a marine passenger ekranoplane “A-050”, which can reach a speed of 450 km/h and carry 100 passengers.
