The plague is raging: there are fewer pigs in Ukraine
At the beginning of the second half of 2017, there were 3,4 million pigs in the industrial sector in Ukraine. This is 9,7% less than a year ago and 3% than at the beginning of the year.

This was reported by the analytical department of the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In addition to the reduction in livestock, Ukraine also recorded lower volumes of rearing and slaughter compared to the same period in 2016. Thus, in the first half of the year, agricultural enterprises received 265,6 thousand tons of increase in live weight of pigs, which is 9,2% less than last year. More than 97% of the grown pork, or 259,2 thousand tons, was sold for slaughter.
“During the first month of summer, the ratio of rearing to slaughter normalized and adjusted the results of the first half of the year - this is positive, because it indicates greater interest in raising pigs. Given the current market situation, such a “wave” of commitment to the pig farming business is not uncommon. However, it should be understood that such interest in raising pigs is in many cases episodic, since it is due to the upward movement of purchase prices. Therefore, it should be expected that those market players who decided to bet on pig farming during such a period and did not approach business organization strategically will “weed out” during the next industry downturn,” comments ASU analyst Alexandra Bondarskaya.
Let us remind you that over the year the number of pigs in Ukraine decreased by 10,5%. Among the reasons for such statistics, in particular, is the epidemic of African swine fever in the country.
