Russia's possible offensive in the Chernihiv region will not be aimed at creating a sanitary zone, but at putting the Ukrainian military leadership on the spot.

Ivan Stupak , a former SBU employee and former consultant to the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Defense and Intelligence, announced this on the Lviv News Manufactory , as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

" This is a real scenario, no jokes, no assumptions , which Russia is seriously considering implementing. The only thing I can't say is the timeframe."

But for the past few months , Chernihiv Oblast has been viewed as a location requiring active military action . I'm not talking about an offensive toward Chernihiv or encircling the city —we don't have the strength for that right now. What I 'm talking about is creating another pulsating, bloody wound on the map of Ukraine to distract our command.

Because even if 2, 3, or 5 thousand Russian troops appear there, even if they occupy 100-200 square kilometers, it requires a rapid response from our command . These are troops who need to be sent, food, ammunition, and so on.

"We're very limited in resources. We don't have—another 50 people, that's easy!—or a huge amount of diverse equipment . Yes, it can be done, but it's difficult," Stupak said.

"Regarding the 'sanitary zone for border security'— with the development of modern weaponry, a sanitary zone should ideally be several hundred kilometers , at least two hundred, to at least somehow guarantee security for everyone. Therefore, 20 kilometers is nonsense. An artillery shell flies 15-17 kilometers, while modern small drones can fly at least 50 kilometers.

Therefore, the goal is to create another pulsating point, to put the Ukrainian senior military leadership on the splits , so that there are not enough people where they are needed – Kostyantynivka, the Pokrovsk area, Lyman, Kupyansk,” the former SBU officer believes.
