This was stated in an interview with Voice of America by Thomas Graham, an adviser to former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, whose candidacy, according to Politico, is being considered by Donald Trump as the new ambassador of the United States in Moscow.
“I see no reason to expand NATO in the current situation. There are enough problems within NATO that need solutions. Russia, in a certain sense, poses a threat to NATO, but the alliance faces no less a threat on its southern borders,” said Kissinger’s adviser.
At the same time, he believes that Ukraine’s membership in NATO “will not increase the security of the alliance and will not help restore relations with Russia.”
“I believe that part of the way out of the crisis could be Ukraine’s non-aligned status. Kyiv needs to exclude itself from the geopolitical struggle, which will allow Ukraine to focus on solving pressing internal problems. I think that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO should, with Kyiv’s consent, be taken off the agenda,” Graham said.
