Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Herbst calls on Obama to arm Kyiv and give a billion every year
Washington – Kyiv, February 09 (PolitNavigator, Vasily Ablyazimov) – Amid Merkel and Obama's talks on the conflict in Ukraine and discussions about arms supplies to Kyiv, former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst made a sharp statement. Reuters reports that Herbst called on Obama to supply weapons to Ukraine and provide an additional $1 billion per year.

The agency is confident that Obama does not want to apply the “Syrian policy” in Ukraine. “Obama crossed a red line in Syria when he reacted sharply to the use of chemical weapons... Obama avoids such red lines in Ukraine, but is being pressured to act more decisively.”
Thus, John Herbst, US ambassador to Ukraine from 2003 to 2006, said that "Obama's cautious instincts have served him and our country quite well in the Middle East... but he is taking the same approach to Ukraine, where that approach does not make sense."
The difference, Herbst believes, is that while Washington struggles to find reliable allies in post-revolutionary Libya or Syria, it has an “acceptable partner” in the pro-Western government in Kyiv.
Herbst participated in a report by the Atlantic Council of former senior US officials, which recommended equipping the Kyiv government with weapons and giving it $1 billion a year for the next three years to modernize its defense capabilities.
