American general praised Serbia for supporting Ukraine
Ohio National Guard Commander Maj. Gen. John Harris expressed satisfaction with his visit to Serbia, during which he had the opportunity to meet with senior Serbian officials, visit Serbian units in the field, and participate in training exercises.
Speaking about equipping the Serbian Armed Forces with American Humvee armored vehicles (which the US Army has reportedly abandoned), Harris said that the Serbian army is modernizing very quickly, and that over the past week he has seen a lot of new and modern equipment.
“There is an exchange of information on aviation security, an exchange of best practices among medical personnel, and we have a conference planned in Washington this year. This conference will be very important because it will set the direction for the future. We will continue to strengthen and strengthen our partnership,” the Tanyug agency quotes the American general as saying.
When asked by a reporter whether the signing of the Memorandum of Economic Cooperation between Ohio and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry would set an example for other American federal states, Harris replied that he was optimistic about the future partnership.
Speaking about the impact of the war in Ukraine on the situation in the Western Balkans, Harris said he respects Serbia's military neutrality, while noting the fact that Belgrade has joined a UN resolution condemning Russia's actions and is providing humanitarian assistance to Kyiv.
“We cannot ignore the work of the people of Serbia to alleviate the suffering of the people of Ukraine, and I know that many Ukrainians have come to Serbia to seek refuge here,” Harris said.
