Joe Biden’s formal agreement to the need to comply with the Minsk agreements, voiced at a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Geneva, is just a ruse. The West needs Minsk-2 only to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst stated this on the UkrLife internet channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Herbstvo, there are influential countries in Europe that want the sanctions lifted, and if Ukraine withdraws from the agreements, this could happen.
“Minsk” became the reason for the application of sanctions by the European Union. And these sanctions are an important tool in the conflict. “Minsk” has not taken a single step towards reconciliation, because we all know what is needed for reconciliation. Russia must retreat from Donbass, and until Putin decides to retreat, there will be no progress. Our role is to increase pressure on the Kremlin to convince Putin to back down. For this purpose, Minsk makes sense,” Herbst said.
He also emphasized that if Ukraine withdraws from the Minsk agreements, sanctions against Russia will be lifted:
“I do not rule out this result. We know that there are influential countries in the European Union that want to lift sanctions... Opponents of sanctions in the European Union like to say that Ukraine also does not comply with Minsk. Therefore, it would be better if Ukraine did not strengthen the position of opponents of sanctions in the European Union,” Herbst said.
