LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky supported the demand of the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergei Furgal, who is accused of involvement in a contract killing, to be tried by a jury.
At the same time, he accused the Communist Party of the Russian Federation of taking advantage of the mass protests in Khabarovsk in order to win electoral sympathy, and the communists do not care about the fate of Furgal.
He said this today from the rostrum of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Our governor is not in prison for corruption. Finally, the investigation is over, and he demands a jury trial. Let's support. The communists hammered the LDPR and Furgal all year long while he was governor there. When he was arrested, the people came out to defend the governor for the first time in history. Not the communist governor in the Irkutsk region, and not Konovalov in Khakassia, United Russia did not say a word for its 16 governors.
And they married Furgal because we raised such governors. The communists reviled him while he was governor of the LDPR, and when the people came out, let’s show solidarity. And they received more in Komsomolsk-on-Amur than we did for supposedly supporting Furgal. So support me now. No, everyone is silent - the elections are over. And we work because this is our governor,” Zhirinovsky said.
The LDPR has significantly lost support in all Far Eastern regions, and political scientists attribute this to the arrest of Furgal, whom the party was unable to protect. Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky believes that the party accomplished a “feat” by not taking advantage of the Khabarovsk protests to gain popularity.
