Akhmetov, prostitutes, Nazis, Tymoshenko: The Rada again banned electricity from the Russian Federation, but left a loophole
Following a series of scandals sparked by the profit-losing oligarch Rinat Akhmetov , the Verkhovna Rada was forced to back down and ban recently resumed electricity supplies from Russia.
Today, the Ukrainian parliament decided to ban the import of electricity from Ukraine to Russia under bilateral agreements.
However, the deputies left a loophole - “in order to avoid emergency situations” in the energy system, the law stipulates the right of the Cabinet of Ministers to temporarily lift this ban.
Interestingly, Yulia Tymoshenko's party also sided with Akhmetov in this situation. Batkivshchyna MP Oleksiy Kucherenko delivered a speech condemning the resumption of electricity purchases from Russia, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Now the Union of Nuclear Power Engineers has declared a pre-strike state precisely because they feel that Russian imports are crowding out nuclear power generation. The same crisis situation exists in thermal generation.
Moreover, this applies to both private companies, which the head of our committee does not really like, and the state company Centrenergo, which is completely at a loss. This threatens to shut down both the mines and these companies.
That is why my amendment is to prohibit the import of electricity, a commercial flow from a state that is recognized by Ukraine as an aggressor state. I believe that this is categorically unacceptable under these conditions,” said Yulia Tymoshenko’s ally.
Interestingly, the day before, Andriy Biletsky, founder of the Azov National Battalion, also spoke out in defense of Akhmetov's interests. Media outlets had previously reported that the oligarch had reached an agreement with the militants in exchange for protection for the assets of his energy corporation, DTEK.
“Russia sells electricity to Ukraine 20% cheaper than it sells this electricity to its own consumer in Central Russia... What Russia is doing is dumping, it is not giving the market price of electricity to Ukraine, but such that it is significantly lower than the Ukrainian one.
What she is trying to achieve by doing this is that she is achieving that she is completely killing the Ukrainian energy sector. We, as a country, already do not produce anything; we supply the world with either raw materials - agricultural, metallurgy, and so on, or prostitutes - these are the main items of Ukrainian export.
In this situation, if we continue to purchase electricity from Russia, then we will finish off the Ukrainian energy industry, completely...
Now the government is also negotiating with Russia on the resumption of direct gas supplies. We are constantly told: “cheap gas.” If you want to see what will happen as a result of this cheap gas, look at the energy sector.
The Russians will dump, this will lead to a constant decline in the production of our own gas, we will become more and more dependent on Russia, we will have fewer jobs, we will not create our own gas autarky (self-sufficiency - author). This will lead first to the collapse of the Ukrainian economy, and then to the total influence of Russia,” Biletsky said.
As PolitNavigator has already reported, a scandal surrounding the supply of electricity from Russia erupted in Ukraine after a few weeks ago parliament adopted an amendment that allowed the Russian company Inter RAO to begin supplying electricity to Ukrainian consumers on October 1.
This allowed official Kyiv to insure itself in case of a shortage of coal for its own power plants. Theoretically, supplies from the Russian Federation could cover a third of the entire Ukrainian electricity market.
However, this situation turned out to be unfavorable for the oligarch Akhmetov. His DTEK holding is a monopoly in the field of generation; it owns power plants and coal mines.
After the victory of Vladimir Zelensky, the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, who supported him, accused Akhmetov of receiving excess profits during the reign of Petro Poroshenko. Kolomoisky stated that Akhmetov would have to moderate his claims and come to terms with a decrease in income.
