According to him, Rusal perceived the court decision to liquidate ZALK as “the result of many years of short-sighted economic policy of the Ukrainian government.”
As you know, on October 29, 2014, the Supreme Economic Court made a decision that allowed the shares of the Zaporozhye plant to be returned to state ownership. In January 2015, the Zaporozhye District Administrative Court decided to liquidate the Zaporozhye Aluminum Plant.
“The critical economic situation in Ukraine for the aluminum industry, rising energy prices and the loss of the domestic market for aluminum wire rod confirmed the management of UC RUSAL in the opinion that further investment activities in aluminum production in Ukraine are economically inappropriate,” explained Kotyuk.
ZALK is the only producer of primary aluminum in Ukraine.
