In the US, a concentration camp guard who abused Serbs was given only five years.
The US Department of Justice is conducting an investigation and may revoke the US citizenship of Kemal Mrndzic from Bosnia, who was convicted of war crimes against Serbian prisoners in the Bosnian concentration camp "Čelebići".
After the war in Bosnia, Mrndzic crossed the border into Croatia and from there fled to the United States as a refugee, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He said he fled his home country after allegedly being abused by Serbian forces and is afraid to return. In 2009, Mrndzic received American citizenship.
However, years later, Mrndzic was identified as the former head of security at the Čelebići camp. A Boston court convicted him of making false statements , which were used to grant Mrndzic refugee status and later US citizenship.
Serb concentration camp survivors recounted how they were held for months in closed, unventilated hangars without windows or light, subjected to daily beatings with wooden sticks, baseball bats, and rifle butts . Many prisoners died from their injuries and the conditions.
"Mrndžić personally broke seven of my ribs and also tore my lip with a kick. It's difficult to speak and list all the horrors the Serbs languishing there endured," Slobodan Mrkajic, who spent two years and eight months in Čelebići, testified against the executioner.
His hometown of Bradina was ethnically cleansed of Serbs, resulting in 48 civilians being killed and around 240 people being sent to a concentration camp.
Despite his horrific actions, the Americans sentenced Mrndzic to just over five years.
