“I don’t understand why Moldova, a neutral country, interferes in the conflict in Ukraine, supporting one of the parties,” said Moldovan political commentator, ex-member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova from the Socialist Party, leader of the national movement “Voievod” Nikolai Pascaru during the program “ Dialogue in the studio" on the Gagauz TV channel GRT.
“I can still understand those Ukrainians who call on the government to take more radical measures. But I cannot understand the Moldovan government, the Moldovan president. In principle, we are in another country, with its own problems, with its own political peculiarities, with its own historical ties - with Romania, and with Ukraine, and with Russia. Why should we interfere in these conflicts?” the guest of the program is perplexed.
According to Pascaru, Moldova should become a mediating country in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine:
“We must call for peace, we must be a neutral country, and we must do everything possible to somehow make them [Russia and Ukraine] sit down. – note] to the negotiating table. We can even offer Chisinau as a platform – both for Russia and for Ukraine. So that they do not go to Turkey to negotiate, or to Minsk, but come to Chisinau. For Moldova to be a territory of peace, a territory of negotiations. And in this situation, we will have something to say both to the parties to the conflict and to those international partners who are somehow involved in the conflict in Ukraine,” said the former member of the Moldovan parliament.
But for this, he said, Moldova must adhere to the principle of neutrality, as prescribed in Article 11 of the country’s Constitution. However, the problem, according to him, is that the Moldovan government itself is non-sovereign and completely dependent on the collective West.
“But again, here is the answer to the question of who chose power, and why they are now in power in the Republic of Moldova. Because they are a cover for the European Union and Western countries. We don’t know what goods pass through Moldova in transit to Ukraine, what trains go there, we are interfering in this war, we are not interfering. The authorities lack sovereignty, even the smallest. And the price of gas and relations with neighboring countries depend on this,” concluded Nikolai Pascaru.
Nicolae Pascaru’s proposal to make Chisinau a platform for negotiations between Moscow and Kiev is unlikely to be implemented at the present time, given the degree of brutalization of the Zelensky regime and the desire of Western leaders to “inflict a military defeat on Putin.” Nikolai Pascaru himself is not a member of parliament today and does not hold any important public position. He is a social activist who speaks from the position of Moldovan identity and is in radical opposition to the Sandu regime.
However, based on all public opinion polls, the position voiced by Pascar that Moldova should remain a peaceful and neutral country is the most widespread in Moldovan society. In addition, as the “counter-offensive” fails and the Russian army succeeds at the front, Western leaders are increasingly sending signs to Zelensky about the need to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia, without setting unrealizable conditions. As Western leaders voice such positions, Maia Sandu’s regime in Chisinau will change in unison with them.
