Kiev is considering what to do with empty transit pipelines to Slovakia
Two of the four pipes on the border of Ukraine and Slovakia are no longer in use due to a decrease in the volume of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, and the Ukrainian GTS Operator, together with the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, is exploring the possibilities of using them for gas supplies from the EU.
This was stated by Sergey Makogon, General Director of the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator LLC, at the 12th International Ukrainian Energy Forum, reports a correspondent "PolitNavigator".
As you know, Ukraine still takes Russian gas for its needs directly from the transit pipeline, registering it as “European” and transferring money to Poland or Slovakia. With the cessation of Russian transit, the “virtual reverse” will come to an end, and gas will have to be delivered to Ukraine “physically” from the EU.
“We are actively cooperating with the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine regarding increasing our gas supply capacity from Slovakia. There are four large pipes that go from Ukraine to Slovakia. Now the transit of gas through Slovakia has decreased significantly, and two pipes are actually used, and the other two pipes are actually not used now.
Therefore, our proposal is to make one of these pipes in the reverse direction so that Ukraine has direct guaranteed capacity to receive gas from the European Baumgarten hub,” said Sergei Makogon.
