After Crimea left for Russia, Ukraine faced the prospect of complete division, writes Kiev political commentator Yanina Sokolovskaya in the magazine “World and Politics”.

“The Transcarpathian region, which could theoretically be claimed by Hungary, the Chernivtsi and Odessa regions, which are interesting to Romania, the Lviv region, which gravitates towards Poland, the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which are striving for Russia, and the Crimea, which has already moved there, are under threat.
Ukraine, which lost its status as the largest country in Europe after the departure of Crimea and reduced its population from 50 to 32 million, is, without exaggeration, under threat. She can only hope for tolerance from her European neighbors. After all, each of the regions is indispensable for the Ukrainian state economy,” she writes.
“Today it is extremely difficult to keep Ukraine “united and indivisible.” Some experts believe that in such a situation, an acceptable scenario is the loss of Donbass. Unacceptable is the separation of Novorossiya (Southeast) or the entire Left Bank,” admits Sokolovskaya.
“Now only Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, who often visits Kyiv, speaks about the indivisibility of Ukraine. Poland began to distance itself from Ukrainian problems. Many Polish politicians make statements that contradict Kyiv's position. And recently, Polish television published a proposed map of the division of Ukraine. On it, the Chernivtsi region is painted in the colors of Romania, the Lviv region of Poland, the Transcarpathian region of Hungary, only its central part of Ukraine, and the rest of the territory, including Odessa and Kharkov, is painted in red, symbolizing Russia,” recalls the Kiev observer.
Kyiv acknowledges the reality of the complete partition of Ukraine.
