Ukraine should launch a campaign in Western media and raise questions with the UN regarding Russia's actions in the Sea of Azov, which has tightened border controls for ships heading to Ukrainian ports after Kiev seized the Crimean seiner Nord with its crew.
Alexander Danylyuk, head of the Center for Defense Reforms, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Danilyuk expressed regret that Russia is outplaying Ukraine in terms of information, explaining its actions with piracy in the Sea of Azov - this is exactly how the Russian Federation interprets the detention of “Nord” by Ukrainian border guards.
“Unfortunately, today the full potential of sanctions against Russia, even in the context of aggression in Crimea and Donbass, has not been used. Therefore, there is no need to talk about their effective use in this case. Ukraine is only reacting, while Russia is actively creating obstacles to the functioning of Ukrainian ports.
And at the same time, it creates an information and legal basis for further steps against our state. It is necessary to pay attention to how not only Russian experts, but also officials position the actions, absolutely legal, of the Ukrainian border service to bring to justice violators of the state border of Ukraine. They call it “piracy”, in the international legal sense. Moreover, there is a comparison with Somali pirates.
Thus, Russia today is actually creating at least the informational prerequisites for the use of its naval forces. In fact, they justify such potential applications today.
From their point of view, the State Border Service of Ukraine, by detaining ships, is committing piracy.
This issue should be raised at the Security Council immediately. Ukraine must develop a plan, a narrative of what is happening. And this narrative must be conveyed to the media and the UN, international organizations,” Danilyuk said.
