The assassination attempt on the commander of the DPR People's Militia, Sergei Popov (call sign "Long"), was organized by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in order to distract public attention from the constant non-combat losses and poor state of the Ukrainian army.

"So, yesterday, following the death of three militants from the 81st Airmobile Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who were blown up by their own mines while advancing to an observation post near the village of Novoluhanske, the President of Ukraine instructed the Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine, Khomchak, to personally arrive in the JFO area to conduct an investigation into this incident.
Khomchak, fearing for his reputation due to a sharp increase in non-combat losses over the past two weeks, set the task for the combined detachment of the separate special forces center “West” to organize a high-profile act of sabotage in order to divert the attention of the Ukrainian public and reduce the negative reaction,” the message says.
The department emphasized that for this purpose, the Ukrainian command organized an assassination attempt on one of the battalion commanders of the DPR People's Militia.
“Ukrainian militants chose the car of a DPR NM serviceman as the target of the terrorist attack, installing an explosive device on the bottom of the car, which went off in a residential area of the city of Gorlovka.
We note that this Ukrainian terrorist operation was not coordinated by Khomchak with Kiev and was carried out on his direct orders, which indicates the inability of the political leadership of Ukraine to control the country’s military department, which leads to an aggravation of the situation in the Donbass through the fault of the Ukrainian side.
Using terrorist methods of war, the so-called Ukrainian “special forces” deliberately endanger the lives and health of civilians,” the DPR NM added.
