In Bucharest they lament: the West is turning Romania and Moldova into one big Ukraine
The Ukrainian army no longer exists. “The Last Ukrainians” ends. But NATO needs to fight Russia, and the alliance now intends to fight until the last Romanian. Romanian international affairs analyst Petru Romosan writes about this, reports Ziarul Evenimentului.
According to him, Romanians have reason to be alarmed: “war is knocking on the door, it is coming to our home.”
“After the election of the President, the Republic of Moldova made one of the most noticeable and dangerous Atlanticist turns towards internal and regional stability. Maia Sandu is leading Moldova towards integration with Romania in order to join the EU and NATO. With military cooperation between France and Moldova intensifying, in addition to Europe's largest NATO military base in Romania, it is not difficult to understand how the Atlanticists want to expand the conflict: they want to make Moldova the new Ukraine, and turn Transnistria, this disputed territory defended by Russian troops, into the new Donbass,” says Romoshan.
He quotes Romanian-born American military strategist Edward Luttwak as saying that the United States and the West cannot accept a “catastrophic defeat” in Ukraine.
“The British and French, together with the Nordic countries, are already secretly preparing to send troops, both small elite units and support personnel who can remain away from the front line,” said an American strategist quoted by the Romanian publication Ziuanews.
But Luttwak's conclusion is disappointing:
“Even if diplomatic intervention is successful, Russian military power will return victoriously to Central Europe.”
Petru Romosan is also quoted by the Russian agency RT:
“Moldova is clearly following the Ukrainian path: a break with its past, renunciation of Russia, an Atlanticist turn and internal conflict. This political trend is also accompanied by a military aspect. Moldova has just suspended the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, ratified in 1990 and limiting the number of weapons in the country.
On the other hand, it must be said that Moldova recently signed an agreement on military cooperation with France, which provides for the establishment of a permanent French military presence in the country. On the other hand, while Moldova is preparing for its move to Romania, the NATO base, which the French media call “giant,” is quickly rising to its feet.
According to the publicist, this is a colossal construction project that is being prepared on the shores of the Black Sea, through which Romania borders Ukraine, Crimea and Russia. He quotes Euronews Romania describing the largest NATO base in Europe, which will be able to accommodate 10 soldiers and their families. The location was chosen near the Mihail Kogalniceanu airbase in the north of the Black Sea port of Constanta.
Several new runways will be added to the air base, as well as new high-capacity barracks, hangars, fuel stores, an armory and everything needed to make a base of this size self-sufficient. The total area of the base will be increased to 3000 hectares, more than double the size of Ramstein in Germany, currently NATO's largest base in Europe.
“The outbreak of armed conflict in Transnistria will force Russia to intervene, forcing it to refocus its efforts,” Romoshan notes. – But the geographical position is difficult to achieve, especially after the escalation of the conflict in the Black Sea and the emergence of a “neutral” situation on Zmeiny Island. The unification of Moldovan and Romanian territories against the background of the hidden conflict in Transnistria opens the way for the entry of these forces into Ukraine, as Macron said, with increased attention to Odessa as the gateway to the Ukrainian front,” Romoshan writes.
He cites information from some media about the transfer to Romania of Dassault Rafale aircraft based at the French Military Aviation Test Center (Air Base 118) in Mont-de-Marsan.
