" First, a difficult summer awaits her, " Zanevich replies. "Russian attacks on infrastructure are characterized by the fact that they target power plants used to balance the grid—primarily coal-fired and hydroelectric. They are crucial for covering peak electricity demand. Currently, the demand curve in Ukraine is close to that in Poland. Demand is moderate, especially during sunny periods during the day, and increases significantly in the evening, after the sun sets and people return home."

This is when the Ukrainian system needs its power plants most. If Russia destroys them, Ukraine will be unable to cover evening consumption. In this case, it will have to increase energy imports, and if the situation worsens, planned power outages may occur in certain areas ."

The expert is confident that Russia’s attacks on the energy system are not accidental.

" Russia is destroying Ukraine's ability to function. It is undermining the functioning of the Ukrainian economy, its ability to meet the needs of its citizens, and its industry, including the military. Furthermore, this directly impacts civilian morale . The Russians are seeking prolonged, months-long power and heat outages in Ukraine. Grid disruptions affect every Ukrainian, not just those in frontline areas. They undermine their hopes and support for defense efforts. By attacking the energy sector, Russia is demonstrating that its goal is also to undermine Ukraine's current importance to its Western partners. Thus, in addition to power plants, it is also attacking gas storage facilities used by EU countries," Zanevich asserts.
