Ukrainian political scientist: The law on “mov” is doomed
The scandalous language law signed by Poroshenko is essentially a purely anti-Russian initiative, since in Ukraine the Ukrainian language is already the state language and, in general, has always had great advantages.
Director of the Ukrainian Center for Social Analytics, ex-People's Deputy Yevgeny Filindash spoke about this on the Topinform channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In essence, this law is not a law on the Ukrainian language, but a law on the de facto oppression and ban of all other languages and, above all, Russian, because no one oppresses or bans the Ukrainian language even before this law in Ukraine. The Ukrainian language already had very great advantages, compared to any other languages, for its development as the only state language, and so on.
Therefore, all the talk about the fact that this law was adopted to protect and develop the Ukrainian language is nonsense and nonsense - no, it was adopted precisely, first of all, in order to completely oust the Russian language from any public sphere.
Everyone understands what language this law is directed against. Moreover, in order to mitigate the negative reaction of Hungary, for example, Romania and the EU as a whole, there are even relaxed conditions for languages that are official languages of EU countries. And the Russian language, the native language of at least half of Ukraine, and if we take the urban population, then 90 percent speak it, then it is completely pushed out into everyday communication from the entire public sphere, from education, from the media, theaters.
How do they imagine wearing subtitles or signs with remarks in the state language? That is, from the point of view of common sense, this law cannot even be considered,” concludes Filindash.
According to the expert, such measures cannot lead to anything good.
“If someone is trying to eradicate the Russian language with such measures, then this will not happen. Just look at the statistics of queries to Google from the territory of Ukraine. We see that the vast majority of requests there are in Russian, despite all these measures. This is a more than objective factor that shows what language people really think in and what language they use,” added the former people’s deputy.
