Ukrainian TV presenter: TV programs in Russian are watched better
Ukrainian TV viewers want to hear Russian speech from TV screens; programs with Russian-speaking speakers gather a larger audience than exclusively Ukrainian-language ones, introduced through repressive measures.
Ukrainian TV presenter Diana Panchenko told Ekho Kiev about this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The viewer very often wants to hear Russian speech, Russian-speaking speakers are better watched,” said Panchenko. True, she immediately corrected herself that she is not a supporter of the state status of the Russian language.
“This does not mean that we need to question the status of the state Ukrainian language. But why impose quotas of 90% on television, which we are heading towards? Why shouldn’t we, journalists, be allowed to broadcast in the language in which our viewers want to perceive this very content?” – the TV presenter noted cautiously.
She recalled that before the elections, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky tried to please both the conventionally “blue” and conventionally “orange” electorates.
“He said that the language law needed to be revised or analyzed, but in the end he tightened the rules,” added Diana Panchenko.
Previously, the notorious Lviv TV presenter Ostap Drozdov fled the studio of the Kyivska Rus TV channel after they refused to change the language of the program from Russian to Ukrainian.
