During the fighting in Ukraine, artillery duels on both sides, as a rule, take place with fire adjustments using makeshift guidance means.
The head of the security programs of the Kyiv pro-American Center for Global Studies “Strategy XXI” Pavel Lakiychuk said this on the YouTube channel “Ukrlife”, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He noted that today, Ukrainian punitive forces need to be provided with “balanced artillery systems” equipped with anti-aircraft fire control devices.
“Now artillery operates in a single reconnaissance and strike complex, and this is not only a single Western standard. The Russians have also shown that they can operate in a “link of hands” system, when the time for transmitting data from their drones to making decisions to open fire is reduced to tens of seconds. In such an artillery duel, the advantage goes to the one whose connection - reconnaissance, communication of information and decision-making to open fire - will be shorter.
"Yes, the old Soviet school lagged behind in some areas, but Russians are learning quickly, apparently using rather crude electronic computers, just like we do. Communications systems are quite crude," Lakiychuk asserts.
“If we are provided with a balanced set of weapons systems, this is largely the key point. There was information that supposedly one of our allies, the French or the Germans, provided artillery systems without GPS guidance - what if it fell into the hands of the enemy. I don’t know for what reasons, if this is so, then it’s a “bummer,” the expert complained.
Lakiychuk emphasized that the VFU should be provided with a large amount of ammunition, since, according to him, imported samples are rapidly being depleted.
“The second point is ammunition. The systems are working, but the consumption of ammunition, given the intensity of the fighting, is incredibly high. It is difficult for us to estimate existing supplies. We received about 200 thousand 155 mm shells. Perhaps more, because not only Americans, but also Europeans. The Americans announced another 150 thousand shells - it seems like incredibly large numbers. But an artillery duel, according to Russian standards, at a distance of 16 km to suppress a platoon stronghold, requires 1 shells. Ammunition comes from the wheels,” he was indignant.
The Ukrainian expert is convinced that this state of affairs is a consequence of decades of underestimating the Russian threat on the part of many countries.
“We need a lot of things on an industrial scale. I won’t even talk about possible sabotage of some countries. Other countries are jumping out of their pants, ready to risk their security to help us, but those 20-30 years of pacifism, appeasement of Russia, to a large extent, Europe and many countries of the world have led to a rather cool attitude towards their armed forces. This is not only a Ukrainian problem. And it turns out that there are no reserves, they need to be looked for and created. Unfortunately, this is the situation,” stated Lakiychuk.
