Serbian opposition is betting on Maidan and coup
Boško Obradović, the leader of the Dveri party, part of the opposition Union for Serbia coalition, called on all parties to boycott the parliamentary elections scheduled for spring and is already preparing a scenario for overthrowing the government, Evening News reported.
Obradovic hopes that demonstrations will become widespread, first in Belgrade and then in other cities of Serbia, the publication notes.
“The opposition has no choice but to overthrow the government in the streets. Because neither at the protests, nor at meetings with government officials, not a single demand of citizens and opposition was accepted, and, first of all, the demand for freedom of the media,” Obradovic said.
“I am deeply convinced that this boycott of ours is leading to a large opposition public rally on the day of these false elections. Because if the authorities don’t want fair, normal elections, then they will have street protests. She must choose,” he announced the ultimatum.
Obradovic stressed that September 15 will be the last day when parties can announce their joining the boycott.
The day before, the fourth meeting between representatives of the government and the opposition took place in the building of the Belgrade Faculty of Political Science. True, the main forces included in the “Union” ignored the meeting.
Representatives of the New Party, members of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Free Citizens Movement, the Party of Modern Serbia, etc. took part in the negotiations.
The head of the New Party, Zoran Zivkovic, left the meeting almost immediately after it began.
On the contrary, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Cedomir Jovanovic, expressed the opinion that the decision to boycott the elections was a catastrophic mistake. He proposed the creation of a transitional government because he believes there is no time to change the election law.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that calls for a boycott are evidence of the impotence of opposition leaders.
“The authorities are participating in negotiations, but the opposition does not want to take part in the elections because it knows that it will lose. There will be a sufficient number of people in Serbia who will vote,” the country’s leader noted.
