Russia is ready to block the Dnieper
Russia has all the technical capabilities to respond to the water blockade of Crimea and block the sources of the Dnieper River and transfer its waters bypassing Ukraine. Hydrologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Danilov-Danilyan spoke about this on the Rossiya 24 TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The specialist voiced this statement while discussing the initiative of LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who back in 2014 proposed, in response to Ukraine cutting off fresh water supplies to Crimea, to build a dam in the area of the village of Krasnoe.
“Technically, this is, of course, feasible. The question is whether it is economically feasible. Technically, building a canal, building a dam - this is all, in principle, possible, especially since we are not talking about too large volumes - a few cubic kilometers and not too long distances,” he said.
“Of course, this is technically feasible,” the expert added.
The Crimean authorities discussed a similar initiative.
“... Such a large tributary as the Desna River passes next to the Oka... It would be possible to transfer some small amount of water from the Desna to the Oka. It is quite possible to take three or four cubic kilometers from the Desna and give this flow to the Oka River,” said Georgy Muradov, the permanent representative of Crimea to the Russian President.
“For now, in the form of a discussion, because we understand that Kyiv will then be left with rapids, and it will simply be impossible to swim there. The Desna flows almost into the Dnieper near Kyiv. Problems will immediately arise. But we are waiting for prudence on the Ukrainian side to conduct negotiations on the flow of international rivers, such as the Dnieper, Desna, and so on,” the official noted.
