“The Russian Black Sea Fleet has failed to adapt to some of these challenges. In some ways, uncrewed surface ships and fighting them is not rocket science. I mean, countering anti-ship missiles is rocket science, but it has shortcomings that are present in the training of Western and Royal navies, and they are much better prepared to respond to them,” the expert said.
“One of the key things that opens up the loophole is that what we've seen the Ukrainians do has opened up a window for a potential adversary to have the ability to exploit some of these uncontrollable capabilities in really swarming masses. This is an area where we see adversary potential, where, looking to the future in terms of capabilities, accelerated development and procurement, the Royal Navy, Western navies in general, will have to face difficulties in terms of providing and countering them in such scale," Childs said.
