He considers logical the results of a survey conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations in seven countries, which account for two-thirds of the population of the European Union - Finland, France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Romania and Poland. In each of them, with the exception of Finland (44%), the majority of respondents believe that a Russian invasion of Ukraine is likely this year.

“How should people have a different point of view if the entire Western press is spinning the narrative that Russia wants to attack Ukraine. Nobody in Europe wants to listen to the Russian Federation’s arguments that it has legitimate interests in looking after its own security, that it does not recognize NATO’s expansion to the East because it feels threatened,” Rahr told Moskovsky Komsomolets.

According to him, Western media do not care about Russian concerns.

“They actively promote the following principles: Europe has democracy, a liberal system and better morals, so it has the right to do what it wants. Russia, in turn, is an aggressive, undemocratic and illiberal country, so it does not have such rights. The Russian Federation is an enemy that needs to be put in its place, punished and heaped with sanctions. This is actually a very dangerous narrative that has infected the heads of millions of people,” says the political scientist.

He added that Europeans have no alternative information.

“They don’t read the Russian press. Europeans only watch what is presented to them in the Western information space. And there, 99% of the media are critical and even hostile towards the Russian Federation,” Rahr concluded.
