Putin told how 2008 led Ukraine to tragedy
Ukraine’s refusal of neutrality actually became one of the main reasons for conducting the SVO
This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with heads of municipalities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation – participants of the All-Russian Municipal Forum “Small Homeland – Russia’s Strength,” reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Let me remind you that Ukraine gained its independence on the basis of the Declaration of Independence. And it was written there that Ukraine is a neutral state. The 2008 decision radically changed the situation in Eastern Europe and from the point of view of ensuring Russia's security.
And besides this, in 2014 there was also a coup d’etat and the declaration of Russians in Ukraine as a non-titular nation. This was followed by a whole series of other decisions that nullified, actually led to what is now happening in Latvia and in other Baltic republics: when Russian people are simply thrown out of the cordon,” Putin said.
He emphasized that these are things that “directly affect the security of our country.”
“And in 2014, after the coup d’etat, fighting began in Donbass; they started a hot war. This all led to the tragedy that we are experiencing today,” the Russian President added.
According to him, the cohesion of Russian society, the strengthening of the economy and the growth of the potential of the armed forces came as a complete and utter surprise to the enemy.
Let us recall that in 2008, the North Atlantic Alliance received a letter signed by the President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine. The document contained a request to join Ukraine to the “NATO Membership Action Plan”.
