Although many serious problems have accumulated in relations between the United States and Russia, they will not be resolved as a result of the upcoming meeting of the presidents of the two countries.
Kyiv political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko stated this in an interview on Ukrlife.tv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“As for the meeting between Biden and Putin, it is obvious that there are a huge number of issues that have accumulated in relations between the United States and Russia. These are Arctic issues, nuclear weapons issues and the new missile limitation treaty, Middle East issues, and so on. I would not say that all these issues will now be resolved at one summit. Moreover, the effectiveness and efficiency of this summit will not exceed 5%, conventionally,” the expert believes.
“Moreover, there is no need to resolve all these issues today. The United States and Russia benefit in many ways from confronting this, this benefit cannot be denied, it cannot be removed from the agenda. Geneva in 1986, when Reagan and Gorbachev met, became an element of a certain fiasco for Gorbachev, a subsequent fiasco. The Russian state machine foresees that there will be some kind of external enemy, the existence of an external enemy, in the face of which the people begin to unite, act together, act as a single mechanism, as a single corporation. This continues to work,” the political scientist noted.
“Moreover, when after 1986 the dismantling of the image of an external enemy began and the confrontation with the West ended, the people asked: who is to blame for the fact that we do not live as well as we would like? In this situation, Putin understands perfectly well that the image of an external enemy cannot be destroyed, it must exist,” the political scientist said.
