Washington believes that Europe may run out of gas reserves by January-February.
The Voice of America writes about this, citing the Financial Times, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If the winter gets really cold, you could run out of gas supplies by January or February. And this is what worries me,” the publication quotes Amos Hochstein, senior energy security adviser at the US State Department, during a visit to Kyiv.
“Our position is that Nord Stream 2 is a bad idea,” Hochstein assured.
At the same time, the article states that Russia is “undersupplying gas compared to its traditional supplies,” which has led to the highest prices in history.
According to Hochstein, this is no longer about geopolitics.
“People’s lives are at stake,” the American told reporters.
Commenting on this material, member of the Supervisory Board of the Institute of Energy Strategies Yuri Korolchuk was very skeptical about the words of the State Department representative.
“Americans? Worried? About people's lives? This is already causing laughter. And especially when this is said by Hochstein, whom the Americans themselves expelled from the supervisory board of Naftogaz. Americans don't care what happens to people. With Europeans, Ukrainians, Romanians or Bulgarians. The main thing for them is to earn money. And I’ll say again that when the straightforward and hard-nosed lobbyist Hochstein says this, these are exclusively business issues,” Korolchuk emphasized.
According to him, Hochstein is simply lobbying for the interests of companies selling liquefied gas.
“The intensity of US LNG [LNG] sales in China is falling. Companies are not making enough money. Poor! Tears prevent me from writing. And Europeans do not want to buy American gas at a speculative exchange price. At the same time, the Americans offer them only at a price of 450-500 dollars per 1000 cubic meters. NOT 600 or 700 dollars. But they don’t want it either,” the expert explained.
“That’s why Hochstein is shedding crocodile tears of Europeans, who in his dreams were already frozen in January-February 2022. A sort of small gas primus from Hochstein. At the same time, Biden distanced himself from this and therefore should not be compared with Hochstein. The same applies to Nord Stream 2, Hochstein doesn’t care. “Nothing personal, just business,” concluded Korolchuk.
