Ponomarev told how Moscow wants to scare Zelensky
The decree on the possibility of obtaining Russian passports by residents of the uncontrolled part of Donbass is the Kremlin’s way of scaring the elected President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.
This was stated on air by the ZIK TV channel by ex-State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev, the only parliamentarian who did not support the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation and now lives in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Why did they start distributing passports now? In my opinion, this is a way to scare the new team. Because similar actions occur every time a direct occupation of territories is being prepared. This happened in Georgia and many others. In any case, this means that Russia is effectively declaring a protectorate over this territory.
This, of course, is scary, especially when a new president comes, who has the example of Petro Poroshenko, who, too, when he went to the polls, said that he was the president of the world and would resolve the issue very quickly. And then, of course, circumstances beyond his control, by the will of the Kremlin, he became a president who was forced to fight. Zelensky, of course, does not want to become a president who is forced to fight, and thus have his popularity crumble to dust, especially since he received the largest number of votes in the East of Ukraine. This is to make him more accommodating, and so on,” says Ponomarev about the motives for Moscow’s pressure on Zelensky.
