Poland intends to maintain embargo on Ukrainian grain
There is no consensus within the European Union on free trade with Ukraine. The embargo on Ukrainian grain must be maintained, at least at the national level.
This was stated by the President of the Chamber of Grain and Forage Crops of Poland, Monika Piantkowska, in an interview with Newseria.
She points out that there are different interests among EU member states that are difficult to reconcile.
" The interests of EU member states vary. We have countries like Spain, Italy, and Portugal, which are natural, traditional grain importers and want some of their grain, including Ukrainian grain, to reach them.
There are frontline countries, including Poland, which is a traditional grain producer and has no need for grain from Ukraine ," emphasizes Pyantkovskaya. "Of course, it should be remembered that trade policy is the exclusive purview of the European Union, so such a decision should be made at the EU level , but all indications are that due to the divergence of interests among member states, this is unlikely."
Currently, Poland has an embargo on supplies from Ukraine of four main grain crops - wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds.
“Looking at the emotions of Polish farmers and the situation in the Polish agricultural sector, I cannot imagine that grain from Ukraine would come to Poland today. The embargo must be maintained at least at the national level,” the expert emphasizes.
