The eldest son of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Victor, will ensure his father’s safety in the event of a “palace coup” or “external invasion.”

Igor Tyshkevich, a political scientist from Minsk who lives in Kyiv and sympathizes with the Belarusian opposition, announced this on his YouTube channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

He believes that the fact that Viktor Lukashenko was elected president of the Belarusian Olympic Committee and ceased to be the president's assistant for national security should not be given special significance.

The most important thing, Tyshkevich believes, is that Viktor Lukashenko remains the head of the interdepartmental council of special units.

“With any transformation of Belarus, if it is accompanied by certain manifestations of force, it is necessary to take into account how this structure will behave. Will she be capable? In the case of external intervention, such a structure is needed because it is a quick response to challenges.

With any change of power, it is important who controls this structure. If we assume the conditions of the palace coup, there are several groups surrounded by Lukashenko. Any of them will communicate with the interdepartmental council,” Tyshkevich said.

In his opinion, it is the interdepartmental council that “creates problems for the Russians” in establishing control over the security forces of Belarus.

The Interdepartmental Council brings together the special forces of the KGB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the border services. The latter, a separate active measures service, has the right to conduct sabotage and reconnaissance activities on the territory of neighboring states in peacetime.

According to Tyshkevich, if Ukraine had a similar structure (an elite special forces brigade) in 2014, Igor Strelkov would not have been able to capture Slavyansk, and the war in Donbass would not have started.

This week, Alexander Lukashenko awarded his eldest son the rank of major general.
