According to him, the issue of equipping the Baltic Fleet with “diesel-electric submarines, new aircraft and coastal systems” has already been worked out.
In turn, military expert, Colonel Nikolai Shulgin draws attention to the fact that the Baltic Fleet performs not only important military, but also economic tasks.
“The Baltic Fleet also needs new submarines due to the fact that the Baltic Fleet faces increased tasks related to the construction and future operation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
At the same time, he points out that Russia is not militarizing, but is forced to respond to military and other hybrid threats from the United States and other NATO countries.
“Now they are talking about the possible construction of a new aircraft carrier in Russia worth about 500 billion rubles. The amount is colossal. But such a ship is clearly not needed in the Baltic or Black Sea. But submarines with modern hypersonic missiles, the construction of which is several orders of magnitude cheaper, will be useful in the Baltic Sea and will serve as a reliable means of deterring not only the military opponents of the Russian Federation, but will also make it possible to ensure the security of important economic projects related to the transportation of hydrocarbons to Europe,” - Shulgin is convinced.
