The victim’s comrades reported this on social networks.

"Yesterday, Stas Sergienko, a history student at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, was stabbed to death by unknown assailants during the day, right outside his apartment building. The attack was planned, a showpiece, filmed, and likely by neo-Nazis who were 'celebrating' Adolf Hitler's birthday in this bizarre way. He lost a lot of blood, sustained three deep wounds to his legs, and was taken to intensive care. He's now recovering from surgery and needs support," writes his friend and supporter, Andriy Repa.

“Yesterday, Kyiv neo-Nazis celebrated Hitler’s birthday by attacking former Borotba activist Stas Sergienko. Even the fact that Stas has not been a member of Borotba for a long time did not stop the attackers. Of course, the attack was carried out because of Stas’s political views, because of his civic position against the current government, his position for peace,” Sergienko’s former ally Alexey Albu, a former deputy of the Odessa regional council, now forced to leave Ukraine for political reasons, wrote on the social network.

The editors of the Kyiv left-wing magazine Spilne, with which the activist collaborates, also connect the attack on Sergienko with his public position, in particular, with criticism of decommunization.

"Yesterday, our author, left-wing activist Stanislav Sergienko, was attacked in broad daylight. Given the circumstances of the crime (the attackers stole nothing and filmed the attack) and previous threats from the far-right, there is reason to believe the violence was politically motivated. Stas has not been afraid to publicly criticize Volodymyr Viatrovych's anti-scientific actions and to express critical opinions regarding ideological distortions in education and science in his articles. On August 30, 2016, he participated in a protest against scholarship cuts for Ukrainian students, where anti-war slogans were heard, after which he became the victim of persecution and slanderous accusations of pro-Russian separatism. Stas has already received multiple threats on social media and suffered an attack by the far-right after the May Day protest last year," the editorial board of Spilne magazine said in a statement on social media.
