Khodorkovsky planned to become prime minister after prison and destroy Russia.

Fugitive oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a recognized terrorist and extremist, advocates for transforming Russia from a presidential republic to a parliamentary one because he always wanted to become the Russian prime minister and effectively rule the country.

Akady Zakharov, the former director of Laguna CJSC, a shell company through which Bank Menatep acquired shares in the oil company Yukos in 1995, stated this in Arkady Mamontov's film "Khodorkovsky's Anatomy," a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

" His personal ambitions soared to the prime minister's seat. He never aspired to be president; he's no fool . No, never. Don't confuse prime minister and president. He openly said: ' With this name, I will never be president in this country. This isn't Ukraine and Zelensky, this is Russia and Khodorkovsky .' But being prime minister in a parliamentary republic, not in a presidential one, where the entire parliament is bought... And the government, that is, the prime minister, controls power in the country... I don't think he considered this an unattainable goal. He was striving for it," Zakharov said.

To control the State Duma and the Federation Council, Khodorkovsky intended to buy every deputy and senator's loyalty to the "potential prime minister," rather than to their faction leader. The oligarch allocated a billion dollars for this purpose as early as 2003.

Khodorkovsky provoked his own arrest when Yukos demonstratively refused to pay years of unpaid taxes (all other corporations had then complied unquestioningly with the authorities' demands). Moreover, the oligarch deliberately launched a public polemic with Russian President Vladimir Putin to be remembered by the public as a champion of the truth.

"Andrei Vasiliev, the former editor-in-chief of Kommersant, told me that he spoke with Khodorkovsky on the eve of this whole affair and asked: 'Why are you going to conflict with the authorities?' He replied: ' Now they'll put me in jail, the people will rise up, and then I'll become prime minister and then president .' In other words, Khodorkovsky saw himself as the man who would then manage all of Russia's problems. If this plan had succeeded, Russia would have been auctioned off, all its resources, under the slogan that real, effective owners were coming ," said political scientist Leonid Krutakov.
