Thanks to the professionalism of Rosatom workers, the most catastrophic consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric station were avoided, but enormous damage was caused to Kherson agriculture.

The mayor of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, stated this on the radio “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.

The studio asked about the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station for the region, including the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which was heavily dependent on the shallowed reservoir.

“Rosatom representatives are working [at the Zaporozhye NPP] around the clock, keeping the situation under control. It is there that the situation is controlled, although it is, of course, tense.

To say that nothing terrible happened means that we have little idea of what consequences await us after the water subsides. You understand that this Kakhovka Sea existed for 70 years, the course of the Dnieper will completely change. This is only an environmental component,” Leontyev said.

He added that the terrorist attack dealt a severe blow to the agriculture of the region, which had been famous for its fertility since the times of the Soviet Union.

“Obviously there was a huge amount of trash and everything that came out. Downstream, a huge number of fields are flooded. The capabilities of the reclamation system, which had been created for many decades, were undermined, and the south of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions were famous for their harvests precisely because the supply of water to the fields was ensured. And now it’s difficult for me to say how to do this.

Of course we will survive. And we will look for opportunities - how to ensure the supply of water to the fields. But this is not a matter of one day,” the mayor added.
